Dependent Child Scholarship
Purpose:
The purpose of the Larry H. Miller Education Foundation (the “Foundation”) is to provide educational assistance to dependent children of eligible full-time employees (“Eligible Employee”) of the Larry H. Miller Company, and select companies managed by the Larry H. Miller Company (“Dependent Children or Dependent Child”). The assistance can be used for undergraduate study at any accredited university, college, trade, or vocational school, with credit hours to be applied toward a bona fide degree or equivalent. Allowable expenses are limited to standard customary tuition, fees and books, not to exceed $10,000 per academic year for tuition1 and books and not to exceed $300 per semester/quarter for books.
Policy:
- Those Dependent Children seeking financial assistance available through the Larry H. Miller Education Foundation must complete an online application and submit it to the Scholarship Selection Committee of the Larry H. Miller Education Foundation via the Larry H. Miller Education Foundation website. An annual meeting will be held with the Selection Committee for the purpose of reviewing applications to select recipients for financial assistance from the Foundation.
- Scholarship Funding will be approved by the Selection Committee for each academic school year, and may be renewable, on application, for twelve semesters or eighteen quarters, provided the Dependent Child Recipient continues to meet the eligibility criteria described below. Dependent Child Recipients may receive Scholarship Funding for a maximum of six semesters or nine quarters while pursuing an associate’s degree, and a maximum of twelve semesters or eighteen quarters while pursuing a bachelor’s degree. If a Dependent Child earns an associate’s degree and then proceeds in pursuing a bachelor’s degree, they may continue to apply for funding; however, the maximum of twelve semesters or eighteen quarters will be inclusive of those quarters or semesters used to obtain the associates degree.
- A Dependent Child Recipient is eligible to receive Scholarship funds up to the age of twenty-nine. If a Dependent Child Recipient is attending a then current semester or quarter when they turn twenty-nine, they may complete the quarter or semester but may not apply for renewal after turning twenty-nine.
- Applicants are notified of their official approval/ denial status by letter through the US Postal Service which will be sent on or before August 5 of each year. Applicants are then notified by the scholar administrator by email one week following the receipt of their official letter. Additionally, the Applicant’s acceptance / denial status will be update on their Larry H. Miller Dependent Scholarship website account portal. Scholarship Funding will be made directly to the respective educational institution’s financial aid department to pay for applicable tuition and customary fees. If tuition or fees are paid directly by the Dependent Child Recipient, or any other person, no reimbursement will be made, unless prior approval is obtained from the Selection Committee or the Education Foundation Program Administrator.
- Reimbursement requests for books must be submitted within 30 days of the beginning of each semester/quarter. The book reimbursement form is available on the Larry H. Miller Education Foundation website and must be submitted through the student’s online account. If a Dependent Child Recipient withdraws or drops below Full-Time Status during the quarter or semester the Dependent Child Recipient’s tuition/fees must be refunded to the Foundation within 30 days of the occurrence. If the Dependent Child Recipient has good reason to withdraw, such as an unforeseen medical condition, the Dependent Child must inform the Education Foundation Program Administrator who will then seek approval from the Selection Committee for a waiver of the refund requirement prior to withdrawing or dropping below Full-Time Status.
LHM Education Foundation Policy and Eligibility Criteria for the Employee Child Dependent Scholarship
- Scholarship funds are for post-high school education, up to a bachelor’s degree, no Scholarship Funding will be available for post-graduate education, for legally bound dependent children of full-time employees having continuous employment with the Larry H. Miller Company, or select companies managed by the Larry H. Miller Company, for at least two years prior to the date the school term begins at the educational institution the applicant is to attend (“Eligible Employee”). For purposes of determining whether the employee has been continuously employed for at least two years, if the employee’s employment is terminated but the employee is then rehired by any entity by the Larry H. Miller Company, or an entity managed by the Larry H. Miller Company, the then current employer rehire policy will be followed.
- The Dependent Child applicant must meet the minimum standards for admission to the educational institution the applicant is to attend, and in fact be admitted to such educational institution.
- To be eligible for Scholarship Funding, as a Dependent Child the Dependent Child applicant must be under the age of 29 and be legally bound to an Eligible Employee.
- To be eligible for Scholarship Funding, scholarship, a Dependent Child applicant must be unmarried at the time he/she enters their eligible educational program. Should the Dependent Child Recipient’s marital status change, once admitted into the program, the Dependent Child Recipient's may continue to receive Scholarship Funding and apply for renewal, so long as they meet all other criteria.
- Dependent Child Recipient's must be enrolled in full-time courses continually, however, not attending courses during the summer semester/quarter shall not be deemed a lapse in enrollment.
- A Dependent Child applicants’ status as an employee of the Larry H. Miller Company, or an entity managed by the Larry H. Miller Company shall not impact such applicants’ eligibility, so long as they meet all other eligibility requirements.
- The academic school year is defined to begin each fall semester/quarter.
- To be and remain eligible for Scholarship Funding, a Dependent Child Recipient's must maintain full-time enrollment status each semester/quarter Dependent Child Recipient's attends as per the requirements of the Dependent Child Recipient's educational institution, or at least 12 credit hours. If Dependent Child Recipient’s educational institution defines full-time enrollment as anything less than 12 credit hours, or uses a different metric, such Dependent Child Recipient's must submit a request to the Selection Committee with their initial application and upon each year’s renewal, explaining their educational institutions full-time enrollment requirements and receive express approval from the Selection Committee related thereto. If the Selection Committee denies the request for the fall semester, a Dependent Child Recipient's may not make a renewed request until the following academic year. If the Selection Committee denies the request for the spring semester, a Dependent Child Recipient's may not make a renewed request until the following academic year, and may not use any unused funds which were not used for the spring semester for the summer semester/quarter.
- No Dependent Scholarship funds may be used for courses which do not earn credits.
- To be and remain eligible for Scholarship Funds, a Dependent Child Recipient's must achieve and maintain a minimum of a cumulative 2.5 grade point average on an unweighted 4.0 scale (or equivalent) and provide proof to the Selection Committee of fulfilling this requirement upon each annual renewal application. If a Dependent Child Recipient's cumulative grade point average falls below the required minimum, Dependent Child Recipient's shall not be eligible for Scholarship Funds until such Dependent Child Recipient’s cumulative grade point average reaches a minimum of a 2.5, at which point the Dependent Child Recipient's must apply, which will be reviewed by the Selection Committee at its next scheduled meeting.
- First time applicants, whether they are in high school or have attended some college, need not submit transcripts.
- Scholarship Funding may cover tuition, customary fees, up to $10,000 per year, and up to $300 for book costs per semester/quarter.
- Application dates begin April 1 and end July 1 of each year for the upcoming academic school year.
- Each academic school year requires a recipient to complete and submit a renewal application by July 1, including documentation of GPA, which must be an official transcript mailed from the academic institution. At this time, digital official transcripts are not accepted, official hard copies must be mailed directly from the academic institution.
- The Foundation may modify eligibility or application requirements at any time without notice.
- A majority vote of the Selection Committee shall approve or deny each Dependent Child application and the amount of each Scholarship Fund, if any.
- Scholarship Funds are not available for post graduate education (e.g., masters degree, doctorate degree, law degree, etc.)
